Not only a great wine maker, Nick is also an award-winning wine critic and journalist who knows how to take a big topic like wine and make it interesting to the novice and connoisseur alike.
In this clip, Nick gives practical ideas and tips on where to start when you want to learn more about wine. As a wine lover and collector (and not to mention, drinker) I was enthralled talking to him and wished we had more than 30 minutes to interview.
Wine 101 with Nick
I asked Nick what sort of questions should we ask our dining companions when we’re ordering wine – other than red or white? His advice is to look to the cues around you. Think about the restaurant – what are they about? Think about the people you’re with and the type of food you want to eat – what sort of style is it? Good and thoughtful restaurants’ wine lists will reflect the type of food they are presenting. He makes the point about combining luxury with simplicity like drinking a Grange with a good burger in great company – distilling the experience down to a simple thing can make you very happy, rather than becoming overwhelmed or intimidated by wine lists in fancy restaurants.
Nick believes the holy grail of wine is balance. Remember the last time you entertained and thought you chose the right wine and drank it at the right time with the right people? Nick believes those perfect moments are just as important as where the wine comes from. As always, balance is the key.
