She has been a source of warmth and wisdom on our television screens. In today’s clip, she talks about how she believes we should embrace each and every opportunity that is presented to us. As part of our ‘Women who inspired us in 2014’ – we’re revisiting her words of advice.
News presenter and author, Melissa Doyle says the best advice she has ever been given was from her husband and that was to only “control the controllable.”
It’s a motto she lives by both in work and in her private life. She believes that with things you can control, work hard and do your best to fix it. What can’t be controlled – just let it go.
When it comes to success, Melissa says she embraces everything and gives everything a go because there is that little bit of fear that the opportunity won’t come again.
“I’m an all or nothing kind of person, so when I take it on I promise to give it everything and see where it leads,” Melissa says.
“People often say you can be lucky in a career but I think there is a bit of luck involved. You need to be at the right place at the right time but you’ve also got to have the ability to walk through the door when it opens in front of you.”
“I think a lot of people can have the door open but don’t have the ability or haven’t done the work and can’t quite step through. But it can work both ways. You can put the work in and don’t have the door open. It’s a bit of both.”
As for having confidence, Melissa says stay grounded because it is better to be confident and not arrogant. Which is one of the many virtues her father taught her while growing up.
