Losing weight is more than just the weight loss

At the end of a weigh loss program, the main fixation for many people is the final number on the scales. This obsession means individuals often forget to acknowledge how much they have gained, such as positive shifts in mindset, and the wonderful life skills they have learned. As with all journeys in life, it’s important to take some to time out from our busy lives and reflect on the process as a whole. This helps us to appreciate how much our body and mind have been through and how much we have accomplished.
Enjoy your new body
A trend we often notice in LifeShape clients is a renewed vest for life after they have completed a program, and why wouldn’t they? People find that they are now able to keep up with their family, and have the energy to spend time with their loved ones. Our clients’ new body positively is also often reflected through their clothing choices. We see so many people start their program in dark, looser fitting clothes. However, as clients come to their final few appointments, we often notice how they have transitioned into colourful, form fitting clothes to celebrate their new body and self-confidence – some individuals are almost unrecognisable!
Celebrating new skills
Regardless of how you think you did during a weight loss program, it’s important to reflect and acknowledge the other wonderful skills that you have gained from this experience. For the majority of LifeShape clients, they leave our programs with improved cooking abilities and increased nutritional knowledge, all of which they are able to share with their family and friends. Clients also learn how integrate physical activity into their day, which allows them to maintain healthy fitness levels for the rest of their lives.
A healthier mindset
Finally, another invaluable skill from losing weight is an ability to talk positively about yourself. This is something that almost everyone struggles with on a daily basis, so it is wonderful that our clients are able to take this self-confident mindset away with them. The weight our clients lose is replaced with a gain in invaluable life skills.
We often forget the importance of looking back and reflecting on a journey, particularly one that is as mentally and physically draining as a weight loss program. However, this crucial process allows us to take a step back to see how much we have accomplished and how it has positively impacted our lives and the lives of those around us. Take a moment to think about what you would like to gain.

Nicola Moore has been a Dietitian since 1992. Before moving to Brisbane, she worked in private practice and consulted to private hospitals in Rockhampton. Nicola has been working at Wesley LifeShape Clinic for 14 years and is the WLC Clinic Manager.
