How to make healthy lifestyle changes

By

Making the decision to commit to losing weight is the most important – and most difficult – step of a weight loss journey.

Permanent lifestyle change is an ongoing process, a combination of making healthy choices and continual effort – but fortunately there are strategies and support available to make it considerably easier and more likely to success long term.

There are many stages you will go through when altering a behaviour, and these are known as the stages of change. The first three of these, pre-contemplation, contemplation and preparation, are crucial for you to move through before you are ready for the commitment of sustained action towards weight loss.

Initially you are in pre-contemplation. You might have been told you need to lose weight, but you have no desire to implement strategies to change what you eat or your exercise habits.

Making the decision to reach out for help means that you have reached the second change, contemplation, but something is still holding you back from taking the next step. It could be a fear of failure, or not wanting to give up your current lifestyle – but your discomfort with your current weight is enough for you to think about what you could do to change this. You start seeking information or you might see your GP for some advice.

From here, your journey can take two paths. People often revert back to the pre-contemplative stage, with thoughts such as “I don’t have time to exercise” or “it is too expensive to eat healthy”.

Alternatively, you might take that next step and follow through with an appointment with a health professional to support you with your goals. You have now reached the preparation phase, you are ready to create the environment you need for positive health changes.

Watch this video from the LifeShape Clinic client Jenny about how she navigated this journey.
