The impact of weight on your health

By

The reasons behind weight gain can be complex. Physical, environmental and behavioural factors can all disrupt your body’s normal state and contribute to changes in your energy balance.

Over the past 30 years, the rates of obesity in Australia have significantly increased so much that in 2015 63.4% of adults were classified as overweight (BMI >25 kg/m2).

Unfortunately, this not just our adult population with one in four children classified as overweight – with serious negative implications for future health.

There are many health implications from increased weight, particularly in combination with low activity and poor food choices.

Most people are aware that excess weight increases our risk of chronic conditions including high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, joint problems, asthma and some types of cancer. Being obese also reduces your life expectancy by up to 10 years.

Often people embark on a weight loss journey based on an aesthetic, or physical goal (e.g. to ‘look’ smaller).

However, it’s important to remember that even modest amounts of weight loss have positive impacts on your health. If you have high cholesterol, blood pressure or high blood glucose levels, losing just 5-10% of your body weight is enough to have a measurable improvement.

Weight loss is also associated with improved mental health, including lower rates of depression and improved self-esteem.

Developing a structured plan with the help of a team of qualified health professionals will support you to start losing excess kilograms in a safe and healthy way.
