Give yourself the gift of self esteem

By

For many people, the cycle of weight loss is an all too familiar journey. It seems every month a new quick fix promises drastic results – but if it was that easy, people wouldn’t struggle with their weight.

Approximately 46 per cent of Australian adults have tried to lose weight in the last year, but an American Dietetics Association poll in 2000 found that 40% of people who are overweight are unwilling to give up their unhealthy lifestyles in order to be healthy.

Why? The downside of repeated weight loss attempts is a reduction in self-efficacy (the ability to produce a desired or intended result) and increased body dissatisfaction and negative self-perception. This often reduces your confidence to make changes to improve your health.

It has been shown that a higher self-efficacy rating, or higher confidence in one’s ability to lose weight, is positively associated with increased weight loss along with stable weight maintenance at six months.

The ongoing impact of reduced motivation and well-being are an important component that is focused on throughout your weight loss program with the LifeShape Clinic.

Increasing your self-confidence is multifaceted, and this is the value of integrating psychology into your program. Starting with implementing small changes consistently, ticking off smaller goals and celebrating these successes week to week are just one way that you will realise that your weight loss goal is attainable.

To lose weight we need to make sustainable changes to our lifestyle – and while initially this may feel like you are giving up your favourite food or favourite way to unwind after a long day, you will develop strategies while working with your support team to find a balance between these indulgences and your weight. Ultimately these are sacrifices that need to be made in order to achieve the bigger goal of improving your health forever.
