How to Break a Yo-Yo Dieting Cycle

By

Why is it that some people appear to excel with their health and weight loss goals and there are others out there who feel they are constantly struggling on a day to day basis? Have these people found the simple solution to losing weight? Is there such a thing as ‘easy’ weight loss?

It is important to acknowledge that everybody’s weight loss journey is a completely different experience. As individuals, we all have unique circumstances which can allow the opportunity for both successes and/or obstacles in any situation. What is important to remind ourselves is that there is no perfect way to lose weight, however, there are some simple concepts we can apply to our journey to ensure that it is a smoother experience.

Sustainable

When it comes to weight loss, there is no need for drastic measures. It is quite common to see celebrities endorsing that latest yo-yo diet, however it is important to remember that this is a short term solution that has no lasting positive impact.

Be realistic with your goal setting and your expectations. It is important to remind ourselves that many aspects can be uncontrollable, such as the food provided at your most recent work related function or the food available at the local restaurant your friend has selected to eat at for their birthday celebrations. Instead of feeling defeated or becoming frustrated at the situation, focus on what you can control, such as not arriving starving so that you are not tempted to go overboard or opting to drive so that you do not end up drinking excessive amounts of alcohol.

Balance

When you are trying to lose weight, it is important that you lower your intake of foods which are high in added fat, sugar, salt and alcohol to help with lowering your overall total calorie intake. However, it is not healthy to deny yourself completely of the occasional treat or extra as this reinforces deprivation, which makes sticking to the diet extremely difficult for the long term. Having planned, controlled treats helps you to maintain your motivation to stick to your goals, prevent major decreases to your metabolic rate, prevent binges and/or relapses to your positive dietary changes.

Consistency

Have you ever accomplished anything great with an inconsistent effort? Too often people give up too quickly on their weight management efforts and wonder why they haven’t achieved the results they initially set out to achieve. It is important to remind ourselves that anything worth it takes time and commitment.

Prioritise

There is a lot to be said for making healthy food choices and exercise a priority in your daily living. If you don’t, then it is unrealistic to expect that both of these will consistently happen amongst everything else that occurs in your day to day living. If it is possible, start each day the right way by scheduling exercise early, or at least with an idea as to when it will fit comfortably with the other activities you have planned for the day. Go to bed each night with a plan of what you are doing the next day so you have a good idea as to how you can go about your day making healthy, nutritious and regular meal choices.

Self Compassion

Self compassion is extending compassion to one’s self in instances of perceived inadequacy or failure. It encompasses being able to identify your positive strengths and changes and not just focusing on the negative. If you fail to recognise this, how will you know what positive changes to carry through each week on your weight loss journey?

If you need help with any of these areas, seek the help of a dietitian or a psychologist who specialises in weight management. A professional will be able to assist you in the positive mind shift needed for long term, healthy lifestyle changes.
