Winter is coming, and with it… dry skin!

May 27, 2019 by Janet Muggivan

Between heaters, air conditioning and the general lack of moisture winter skin naturally endures, we need to amp up our moisturisers.

Every winter, dry skin seems to sneak up on us. And just like that, our skin looks and feels dry, our makeup doesn’t seem to look as fresh, it certainly doesn’t wear as well, and it’s all because of a lack of moisture in our skin. If you’re feeling dry, check out my top 6 brands for the best hydration solutions.

1. Gentle cleansing: HydroPeptide® Exfoliating Cleanser: Energizing Renewal

HydroPeptide® Exfoliating Cleanser: Energizing RenewalThis is an anti-ageing exfoliating cleanser featuring 7 peptides, jojoba beads and buffered glycolic acid. This is a perfect cleanser for those concerned with dryness, rough texture, dullness and fine lines and wrinkles.

It gently, yet thoroughly cleanses your skin with foaming peptides and a burst of citrus. Free of all nasties, it’s gentle, yet effective for dry and mature skins. I love this one as it’s active enough to really deep clean, yet not abrasive at all.

This is a salon brand. Stockists can be found at hydropeptide.com.au

2. Avène Eau Thermal Water

Avene Eau Thermal WaterThis all purpose water is remarkable when sprayed onto your face after cleansing, and prior to applying your Avène Eau Thermal Water. This mimics the effects of a facial by locking into your skin this incredible water that has clinically proven benefits to soothe and calm sensitive skin.

It has a low mineral content, a high silica content and an excellent variety of trace elements present. What this means for your skin is it is calming, soothing and gives relief to dry and even the most sensitive skins. Separate to enhancing your moisturisers benefits, it can be used to set and refresh your makeup throughout the day as well.

Stockists: Priceline, Chemist Warehouse
 & selected pharmacies

3. Hyaluronic Acid Serum: Gernétic – Cells Life

Gernetic Cells LifeThe main benefit of the Cells Life product for me is the concentration of Hyaluronic Acid. This is a molecule renowned for it’s ability to retain moisture. This serum is lightweight yet concentrated, so a small application prior to your moisturiser will make any moisturiser work double time!

This product also assists with elastin and collagen building which will improve skin vitality and bounce. It is suitable for use around your eyes, neck and the décolletage. The active ingredients in Gernétic skin care products are entirely extracted from marine and plant cells.

This is a salon product and stockists can be located here: gernetic.com.au

4. Day Moisturiser: Go-To Very Useful Face Cream

Go-To Very Useful Face CreamAn ultra-hydrating and lightweight daily moisturiser that defends your skin against premature ageing. It’s a cream, so perfect for adding extra moisture in winter, yet lightweight enough to wear under makeup.

This is face cream that is as much about anti-oxidants as it is moisturisation. Antioxidants stop free radicals (found in UV rays, smoking, environmental pollutants, toxins) from attacking your skin, which is the main cause of ageing in the shape of wrinkles, loss of skin elasticity and suppleness.

Very Useful Face Cream also boasts power anti-oxidants CoQ10 and Amla Berry, known to have 30x more anti-oxidants than oranges, as well as many lovely replenishing oils and butters. CoQ10 is a relative newcomer to the skincare scene, but given after age 30 our skin’s natural supply of CoQ10 starts to deplete, keep an eye out for skincare products containing this ingredient to minimise free radical damage. Your skin is thoroughly hydrated, supple, smooth, soft and most crucially, shielded from free radical damage.

Go-To products are available online: gotoskincare.com

5. Night Moisturiser: A’kin Rosehip & Shea Intensive Moisture Anti-oxidant Complex

A’kin Rosehip & Shea Intensive Moisture Anti-oxidant ComplexSuited for mature skin that needs special care, the complex uses a natural rich concentration of certified organic Shea butter and Rosehip oil, blended with a highly penetrating olive complex to leave your skin feeling hydrated and looking naturally youthful.

Some of the active ingredients include Certified organic Shea butter – an intensely moisturising skin conditioner, Australian Avocado – rich in vitamins A, B5 and E, Aloe barbadensis leaf juice – to calm and soothe dehydrated skin and Omega 9 and Omegas 3 and 6 essential fatty acids to stimulate cell renewal.

If you are after a Vegan friendly range, A’kin is perfect for you.

Stockists can be found at purist.com/akin-skin-care

6. Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair – Recovery PowerFoil Mask

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair - Recovery PowerFoil MaskHigh-performance foil-backed sheet mask creates a protective barrier, allowing our potent technologies to penetrate fast and deep within skin’s surface and helping to lock in moisture.

Twice the concentration of Hyaluronic Acid found in Advanced Night Repair Serum, each treatment delivers a surge of liquid revitalization, immersing your skin in a powerful moisture magnet. It is an ultimate infusion of youthful moisture.
