What every woman entering menopause should know

The changes women experience as they begin their menopause transition (technically known as peri-menopause) are not just dependent on lowered oestrogen/estrogen and progesterone levels.

The usual symptoms of menopause (hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, fatigue, emotional upheaval, low libido, weight gain, bloating, joint pain and more), combine with ‘other’ lifestyle issues a woman in mid-life might be experiencing.

These include thyroid imbalance, stressed adrenal glands, alcohol & medication-induced liver inflammation and allergies.

All of these problems accumulate over a woman’s lifetime, especially when years of caring for others overtakes caring for yourself. Added to this is increasing confusion about ‘correct’ diet and exercise in mid-life, then peri-menopause becomes a ‘perfect-storm’ for the arrival of even more health problems.

Millions of women are thrown into post-menopause health disaster needlessly. This then becomes problematized in medicine as diseases of older age.

For post-menopausal women, the ‘biggies’ include cardiovascular heart disease, osteoporosis, liver disease and inflammatory changes in joints.

Changing lifestyle habits during the menopause transition is essential for women experiencing moderate to severe symptoms.

Most women respond to lifestyle changes, others feel better on hormonal treatment. However, because of the diversity of menopause experiences, the ‘cookie-cutter’ approach towards hormone supplementation does not suit everyone.

The good news is that there are numerous ways to manage the menopause ‘change’. The starting point is sleep and hot flush management as well as nutrition and other changes to lifestyle that change hormonal health.
