As a stylist, one of the most common questions women over 40 ask me is how to wear jewellery. Many women feel challenged with the concept of what is ‘age appropriate’ and as a result don’t stray too far from traditional fine jewellery styles.
Thankfully the days of dainty pearl sets past a certain age are over and women are free to express their personalities through bold and statement-making jewellery.
So how can we channel the likes of bling queens, Iris Apfel, Rachel Zoe and Linda Fargo – to name a few – who incorporate amazing jewellery into their daily lives?
With a few simple but effective tips to help bring on the bling in style:
Grown Up Bling
For the over 40 woman, take a ‘grown-up’ approach to jewellery. Look for timeless and classic styles with a ‘luxury’ feel – even if your style is rock chick. Steer clear of trend-driven styles which only look good on the 20-somethings, par example nose rings.
Jewellery should be an extension of your style personality. Are you feminine, boho, a rock chick or a glamour queen? For inspiration look to your favourite celebs and emmulate their style.
Build On a Signature Look
Iris Apfel is the ultimate queen of accessorising but it does take creativity and talent to do it as well. If you’re not sure where to start, choose one area as a focal point – statement earrings, a great cuff or a multi-strand necklace.
Great Style is Everyday
Wearing statement-making jewellery does not have to be just for special occasions or events. Wear something fabulous everyday to work or at home. Great accessories can bring an outfit to life.
Focus or Balance
If you fear ‘over-blinging’ you can do one of two things – select one area as the focal point and keep the rest minimal; or balance evenly from head to hands, e.g. if you’re wearing statement earrings pair only with a bracelet or a cocktail ring.
Good quality costume jewellery will last a lifetime so invest in the best brands that you can afford. That said there are many brands such as Witchery, Mimco, Samantha Wills and Country Road that have quality jewellery at affordable prices.
Mix and Match
Mix it up and pair inexpensive fashion-forward pieces with your favourite fine jewellery or costume pieces.
Sure there are guidelines to great style but at the end of the day it’s all about self expression and having fun. Be daring and remember #AttitudeNotAge!
