Regardless of whether you believe in chakras, chanting, higher consciousness or spirituality, there is no doubt that yoga and the concept of chakras is here to stay. There are over 20 different types of yoga known today. Whilst the original styles of yoga still exist, some of both the physical and meditative styles have been adapted to suit everyone from gym-goers to pregnant mothers.
The origin of yoga as a spiritual practice is intermeshed historically with the concept of chakras. While there is no scientific evidence of chakras, they are part of ancient cultural beliefs recorded as far back as 1500BC, originating in India. The history of chakras reads long and historically complex. The concept of chakras as a tradition, or belief, is found particularly in the tantric traditions of Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism. Much like traditional Western religions have survived for centuries (and evolved), so has the practice of yoga and the belief that yoga is the physical way to maintain or balance your chakras.
Most people have heard of at least Hatha, Bikram and Kundalini yoga. Kundalini yoga is sometimes referred to as the Boss, or the “Mother of all Yogas”. It is a blend of Bhakti Yoga (the yogic practice of devotion and chanting), Raja Yoga (the practice of mediation/mental and physical control) and Shakti Yoga, (for the expression of power and energy).
