The Style essential all women should own

There is no doubt that a beautifully tailored blazer or jacket is an enduring wardrobe essential.

Women from 18 to 80 can wear it at any time of the day or night. It’s versatility is endless – style icon Sarah Jessica Parker can attest to that. Short, long, single button or double-breasted, buttoned up or open, over jeans, a glamourous red-carpet gown, a pretty frock, a prim tunic or teamed with a colourful knit – SJP weaves the magic of the black blazer throughout her wardrobe.

If you don’t already own a great blazer, the time to buy is now with the onset of cooler weather. Like Sarah Jessica Parker, I have several styles in various lengths and fabrics, but whether I’m buying short or long versions, blazer or tuxedo styles, I always adhere to a few tips when buying:

  • Tailoring and fit – a nipped in waist, fitted (but not tight) across the shoulders
  • Fabric – buy the best quality you can afford but that said many multi-chain options are great – Zara, Witchery, Country Road, to name a few
  • Avoid the ‘too big’ look – the shoulders should not be too big and the sleeve length too long
  • It should not be tight at the waist – you want to be able to button it comfortably but also maintain a great line if open
  • Avoid contrasting or ‘loud’ buttons or details that will date quickly
  • The length should sit on your hip bone (generally)
