When Valentino Garavani opened his atelier in Rome in 1959, he featured the colour poppy-red in his first collection.

“When I was young, I went to see the opera Carmen in Barcelona and the whole set was red – the flowers, the costumes — and l said to myself, “I want to keep this colour in my life.” So I mixed a shade with the people who make fabrics — it contains a certain amount of orange — and Valentino Red became an official Pantone colour.

Rome’s stylish elite couldn’t get enough of Valentino’s red and it became a symbol of elegance and high fashion.  But of course it had been, and continues to be, a symbol associated with power, wealth and passion – and more particularly love and lust.

For those that love the power and sensuality that red invokes, you will be pleased to know that red is back in all it’s daring and sexy glory.

It’s one of spring/summer’s hottest trends for day and night.

Though a glorious Valentino-esque red gown is the epitome of elegance and style for glamorous black-tie events, it’s also the perfect choice for low-key daytime events or a chic cocktail soirees.

Accessorise with shades of black, nude or white, or if you’re after a high-fashion look pair red with shocking-pink, blue or camel.

Daring red calls for a strong beauty look – no makeup free days or mousy hairstyles. Don’t overdo it though – a strong lip and long, thick lashes or a sexy, smokey eye and nude lips.

This spring/summer make an impression – wear red.  It’s fashion instant confidence-booster.

As legendary designer Bill Blass once said:

When in doubt, wear red.
