For over thirty years Pat McDermott has penned the Family Matters column at the back of the Australian Women’s Weekly – sharing the highs and lows of being a mother of five children. In this interview she tells Deborah that she thinks society is taking parenthood a little too seriously.

“We’re a little bit child obsessed these days… child rearing was just something you did and it was sort of fun at times, sad at times, bad at times, hard at times. Now there seems to be a competitive streak to the whole thing,” she said.
