Dressing for Autumn can be tricky as the weather can be unpredictable switching between warm and chilly.
My no-fail tips for great Autumn style include:
- investing in ‘seasonless’ pieces which can be styled a number of different ways
- base your Autumn wardrobe around classic styles which provide the perfect opportunity to layer
- have fun with style by adding pops of colour and trend-inspired accessories
Following on from my ‘How to Master Transeasonal Dressing’ tips, here are more Autumn style essentials that you can wear now:
Autumn dressing does not have to mean dark colours and prints. Choose bold and bright colours for a modern spin on traditional autumn dressing.
THE SEASONLESS SKIRT
For chic seasonless style you can’t go past a fluid skirt. Pleated skirts remain high on the must-have list and cross between work to play so effortlessly. Wear with sneakers, flats, heels or boots.
ROLL NECK/TURTLENECK KNIT
Since Audrey Hepburn made it famous in Funny Face, the black turtleneck remains a wardrobe classic. For both day or night, a silk knit elbow-length version is both chic and lightweight and can be worn with just about anything.
Swap your summer florals for more autumnal prints likes checks and plaids. Checked blazers are a current major fashion trend for Autumn/Winter. Worn in the boardroom with tailored pants (a checked suit for work is tres chic) or on the weekend with jeans, a checked blazer is timeless Autumn dressing at it’s best.
Style Note: Plaid needn’t be all black and white, opt for colour.
HIGH-WAISTED SKINNY JEANS
Yes you can wear skinny jeans! No matter your age, body shape or style personality, you CAN skinny jeans AND wear them well. Post 40, a higher-waist version that is both both comfortable and flattering on the tummy. Autumn is the perfect time for ankle-baring cropped versions.
Style note: Lightweight jeggings versions are a comfortable alternative to classic denim styles.
