Most of us have picked up myths and misconceptions about money along the way. Our parents, our teachers, our societies have so many ideas about money; who can have it, who can’t, what it takes to make money, have much can I spend, on and on it goes.
Interesting thing about all of these ideas of money that have been impelled onto you, your point of view creates your reality. Your reality does not create your point of view. What does that mean? What that means is, when you have a point of view about money, regardless of where it came from, if you believe it, if you are holding on to it as real and true, it will be real and true for you.
The good news, you can change it. Change your point of view about money, let go of the myths and misconceptions that are stopping you and you can change your financial reality.
Here are 3 common myths and misconceptions about money and the tools to change it:
- Misconception #1 – You have to work hard for money
This one is familiar to a lot of us. Hard work equals money. No pain. No gain. Since our point of view creates our reality, if you have the point of view that you have to work hard for money, you will spend your life working for every dime that you earn. Doesn’t sound like much fun, does it?So wherever you’ve bought the idea that you have to work hard for money, would you let that go? What if you could have a different perspective? What if you had the point of view that money was fun and playful and enjoyable and came to you easily?
Try this, every morning when you wake up and every night before you go to bed, say, “All of life comes to me with ease and joy and glory.” Repeat it 10 times or more. When you first start out, it might not feel true. But keep saying it. You are changing your point of view which will change your reality. When you have the point of view that life comes to you with ease and joy and exuberance, it will, and that includes money.
- Misconception #2 – When I have a certain amount of money, then I will be happy
How much money have you decided you have to have before you can be happy? What amount do you believe that you require before you can have a sense of peace and ease? Would you be willing to consider that it’s not a certain amount of money that will bring you the joy and ease you desire? Would you be willing to be joyful now regardless of what’s in your bank account? Here’s the thing. Money follows joy. Joy does not follow money. The misconception of, “When I have money then I will be happy” has left a lot of people searching endlessly for money, sometimes even making lots of money but never finding the sense of peace and happiness they truly desire.
When you begin to live your life as a celebration now, when you begin to choose joy and gratitude in every moment, money will follow.
What do you love to do? Is it running? Or hiking? Reading? Cooking? Take a moment to write down everything that’s really fun and joyful for you. Now start doing those things – every day. As you do the things that are fun for you, your joy increases and your money will too. Money follows joy.
- Misconception # 3 – Money comes from what I do
Most of us have been told that money is a linear thing; “In order to make money you have to do A, then B, then C.” We have concluded that money can only come from hard work, an inheritance, winning the lottery or maybe smart investments. So we do our best to get it right. To do the right things. To make the right choices. And to definitely not get it wrong. No pressure there. What if money is not linear? What if money could show up in all kinds of ways, from all kinds of places? What if you could have unlimited revenue streams?
Sounds good right? But how? How do you go from the idea that money is linear and can only come from what you do to receiving money from a variety of places? Ask. Simple, I know. Sometimes we dismiss the simple because it’s too easy. Please don’t dismiss this! Ask and you will receive is actually true. Most of us never bother to ask.
Daily ask, “What would it take to have multiple revenue streams?” And, “What could I choose today that would change my financial reality right away?” Another great one to use for money and everything else in your life is, “What else is possible here that I’ve never considered?”
When you ask questions, you go beyond the myths and misconceptions that are limiting you and your money.
What if the topic of money could be fun, light-hearted and playful? What if, rather than buying the myths and misconceptions that others have impelled on you, with a sense of curiosity, you started asking questions? What if “ask and you will receive” became your standard mode of operation? I wonder, how much more joy you would have? I wonder… how much money would follow?
