Where did Melissa Penfold’s natural sense of style come from?

Deborah’s special guest interview is with the multi-talented Melissa Penfold – journalist, author, style expert and curator of one of Deb’s favourite interior style blogs on

Deb considers it one of the most inspiring interior style blogs she has ever come across. She calls Melissa’s book, the Little Black Book, her style bible.

She asks Melissa, “Where did your natural sense of style come from?”

“I grew up with a mother who loved design, and in a house that was decorated by Australia’s first really well known interior designer, Marion Best. I was dragged around antique shops, which I hated at the time, but it must’ve rubbed off on me. My grandmother also had a beautiful house.”

Melissa studied Communications at university and had an opportunity to do work experience at House & Garden magazine.

“I started with a two-week stint and stayed for ten years, working my way up to Belle magazine” she tells Deb.

“I become design editor at 24 years old.”
