Thanks to the very knowledgeable Deborah Hutton, this is probably the easiest makeup article I’ve ever written – more on why later in the post.
As a stylist, the most common feedback I receive from readers and clients over 40 on makeup include:
- I don’t know what colours suit me anymore
- I don’t know how to apply makeup properly
- I’m stuck in a beauty rut
- I hate going to makeup counters because I feel intimidated
The fact of the matter is that makeup can age you faster than you can say the word lipstick and as we get older we must re-evaluate our approach to makeup and understand what colours and techniques enhance our skin and take off the years rather than add them – a situation that ALL women want to avoid.
Going to a makeup counter for older women can be a demoralizing experience when you’re faced with young (and often patronising) women who don’t really understand the dilemmas of ageing skin. (Often resulting in buying a heap of products you don’t need or use OR you walk away confused and empty-handed to return to old faithful’s that you have used for years).
Additionally we look to magazines and online publications for inspiration only to find images of very young women that we can no longer relate to.
Over time I’ll share beauty and makeup advice for the grown-up woman however this week I’m turning to Deborah herself to provide the makeup tips. Deb’s series of online makeup videos – ‘Eyeshadow and Eyeliner Tutorial’, ‘Styling Eyebrows’ and Makeup Tip #2: Bold vs Nude’ – provide real and practical makeup advice for the mature woman.
With her beauty and makeup experts, Deborah provides excellent tips and advice relating to makeup techniques, shades that work best, how to blend and why you should avoid metallic eyeshadow.
The videos are especially effective because Deborah ‘walks the talk’ and shows herself sans makeup and provides a ‘real’ visual demonstration of the techniques and tips to good makeup application.
Makeup for the grown-up woman doesn’t have to be fraught with confusion and anxiety and you don’t need a multitude or products. With practical advice and an understanding of products and techniques, you can achieve a natural and healthy glow with makeup.
Do yourself a beauty favour this week and check out Deb’s videos and stay tuned for lots more beauty advice in the weeks to come.
