What are chakras?
We often hear the word ‘chakras’ used around the subjects of yoga, meditation or spiritual healing and it can all sound abit airy-fairy – but what does it mean and what do they do?
The chakra system originated in India between 1500 and 500 BC in the oldest text called the Vedas. The word ‘chakra’ is derived from the sanskrit word meaning ‘wheel’. Literally translated from Hindi it means ‘Wheel of spinning Energy’. It is an ancient and highly complex concept, linked to the studies of the traditions of Indian religions. But for today, we present a basic summary of chakras in the context of modern-day spiritual healing, or helping to achieve mind-body balance.
Firstly, the chakras aren’t like organs in the physical body. A chakra is consistently described as like a whirling, vortex-like, centre of energy. Within our bodies, you have seven of these major energy centres and many more minor ones. The seven chakras are the centres in our bodies in which energy flows through.
The seven chakras and where they are located are: Base (groin area), sacral (lower abdomen just below the navel), solar plexus, heart (chest or heart area), throat, third eye (forehead) and crown (top of the head).
It is believed that chakras connect your spiritual body to your physical one and regulate the flow of energy throughout the electrical network (meridians) that runs through the body. The meridians have been described as resembling the wiring in a house. It allows electrical current to be sent to every part, and it is ready for use as required.
Sometimes chakras become blocked because of stress, emotional or physical problems. If the body’s ‘energy system’ can not flow freely it is likely that problems will occur. The consequence of irregular energy flow may result in physical illness and discomfort or a sense of being mentally and emotionally out of balance.
