Since publishing my new cook book ‘Entertaining made easy with Deborah Hutton’, I’ve been asked many times “why write a book on entertaining?”
It’s easy, entertaining at home, and the joy to be found in that is something we don’t do enough of.
In a world where technology has brought us closer together through email, texting and social media, I believe it’s even more important to stay connected through quality time and face-to-face nurturing our relationships round the dining table in a relaxed environment.
Opening up the doors to your home allows you to connect with friends and family on a more intimate level, and also the opportunity to welcome new friends. It’s a great way to share experiences, let your guard down and unwind over a glass of champagne.
It’s all about good food, good conversation and good fun. The goal of successful entertaining isn’t so much about impressing people and being perfect, but more about putting them at ease and having a few laughs.
There must be some hidden alchemy, a lively cocktail of personalities and a sense of occasion. The key is all about you and your guests enjoying one another’s company, with delicious food and a table setting that creates a little anticipation.
It’s important to create a great guest list. Think about a good mix of interesting, like-minded people, with a few “funsters” thrown in for good measure – you need one or two strong personalities to help keep the conversations and meeting new people.
Anyone can do it. You don’t need years of experience or a large budget to entertain guests at your place. Some of my most successful events have been the simplest. If you don’t consider yourself a good cook, there are some easy no-fail recipes in my book “Entertaining made Easy with Deborah Hutton” that will help build your confidence. To get you started, try the ‘Roast Portuguese Spatchcock with Olives & Capers’ on Page 151 for a simple, one tray meal that never fails and tastes insanely good!
We all work really hard but finding the right balance is an essential part of life and that for me is to entertain my mates. So, I hope I’ve inspired you to open up your home, invite your mates in and create some great memories together, and what better time of year than during this festive season when you can go all out … set a wonderful table, create the ultimate festive menu, chill the drinks and spend this time with those you love.
