Fashion’s most anticipated event, the Met Gala, is finally here.

The glittering annual event held as a fundraiser for New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art also signifies the opening of The Met’s Costume Institute annual fashion exhibition.

This year’s exhibition “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” according to head curator Andrew Bolton, “focuses on a shared hypothesis about what we call the Catholic imagination and the way it has engaged artists and designers and shaped their approach to creativity, as opposed to any kind of theology or sociology.”

The exhibition, which has received the official stamp of approval from the Vatican, includes papal robes and accessories from the Sistine Chapel, many of which have never been seen outside The Vatican. The exhibition also features fashions from the early twentieth century to the present including 150 designer pieces including Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Chanel and Versace.

This year’s theme hasn’t disappointed with celebrities, A-listers and fashion’s elite choosing resplendent creations sent from the fashion gods. Whilst some celebrities took the devotional theme to the extreme, others took a less heavenly approach. Either way, this year’s Gala fashion has not disappointed.

Red carpet fashion facts:

  • Sarah Jessica Parker’s wore a Neapolitan nativity scene on her head by Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda
  • Rihanna’s Maison Margiela by John Galliano gown was inspired by papal robes
  • Katy Perry added angel wings to her chain-mail Versace mini dress and boots ensemble
  • Ariana Grande’s dress depicted scenes of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel
  • Kate Bosworth recreated her Oscar de la Renta gown
  • Priyanka Chopra’s Ralph Lauren hood took 250 hours to hand bead
  • Zendaya’s ensemble resembled a modern day Joan of Arc
