Setting your LifeShape Goals.
Work parties, summer barbeques, Christmas catch-ups, overseas holidays…. the temptations to overindulge over summer are endless! While successfully managing your weight during this time can be tricky, it is certainly achievable with good planning.
If the fun you’ve had shows on your scales each New Year, then perhaps you need to take preventative action now. Here are our top tips to help you set goals for summer and navigate your way through this period so you can look and feel great in the New Year.
Goal One: Plan Ahead
Planning is the key to weight loss success. Whenever you have a social outing or event, always have a plan. Think about what your key challenges will be for each particular situation and set some clear goals and strategies to prevent overindulgence. For example, you may choose to drive to an event to avoid alcohol or eat beforehand so you won’t be tempted by endless plates of finger food.
Goal Two: Keep a Food Diary
Food diaries are powerful tools when it comes to weight loss. Research shows that those that keep daily food diaries lose twice the amount of weight as those that don’t. It’s thought to work by keeping you accountable and bringing full awareness to what you eat and the extra calories that can easily slip in. You can keep a paper based food diary or you can use apps like MyFitnessPal.
Goal Three: Watch the Liquid Calories
A single summer juice, milk based coffee or alcoholic beverage can have as many calories as a small meal. Unfortunately, we never tend to compensate for liquid calories as we often don’t consider them a meal and they are digested so quickly they don’t keep us satisfied. If you’re consuming liquid calories on a daily basis it may be time to cut back and instead opt for water, diet soda or tea for a caffeine hit.
Goal Four: Get Moving
Don’t let exercise slip off the agenda as you get busier! Instead, commit to your regular routine or even ramp it up a little to help compensate for any slight overindulgences. Take advantage of the warm weather and go for an early morning bike ride or a late night walk after dinner since the days are longer.
Goal Five: Stay Hydrated
Water is essential for keeping your body healthy. It also plays a key role in weight loss as it is a natural appetite suppressant. We often mix up that we are hungry when really, we are thirty. Research shows that people who drink a glass of water before each meal eat less and lose more weight than those who don’t. Dehydration can also cause hunger pains so next time you’re feeling hungry, try drinking a large glass of water and wait 10 minutes before you decide whether to eat.
Goal Six: Commit!
If you are serious about taking control of your weight this summer then it is time to get started now. Instead of jumping on the next fad diet, look instead for something more sustainable. Consider investing in an Accredited Practising Dietitian who can help you set manageable goals for you and keep you accountable through summer.
So what are you waiting for, take control and get in shape for summer today!
