5 ways mature women can make money in the gig economy

The gig economy has made it easier for younger Australians and international travellers to make some quick money on the side, but there are also plenty of opportunities for seniors to get in on the action.

The snack-sized nature of a side hustle makes it ideal for seniors who want to supplement their existing income with additional pocket money – and thankfully, it doesn’t necessarily involve jumping on a bicycle to home-deliver food!

There are various avenues that are better suited for the ageing population, including Airtasker, MyCaravan and Sittr.

Airtasker: Got a green thumb? There are plenty of grassy patches that could do with the help of a seasoned gardener to whip them into shape. Airtasker’s latest research found that there were just under 50,000 gardening tasks posted to the platform this year. The latest gardening tasks can be found here:

MyCaravan: If you’ve got a caravan sitting idle in the backyard, you may as well put it to use by renting it out on MyCaravan. This peer-to-peer platform connects private caravan owners with renters, enabling them to earn approximately $90 a day during off-peak season and up to $200 a day during peak season.

Sittr: With many seniors already doing unpaid babysitting for grandkids, there’s no reason why they can’t monetise their services, too. Sittr is Australia’s number one babysitter and nanny app, with verified sitters receiving $23 an hour for their services. A recent audit of the platform found that sitters aged over 60 have an average user rating of 5/5. Further, parents have reported that they have a higher trust rating for older carers.

Australia’s largest peer-to-peer car sharing platform, DriveMyCar coordinates the safe rental of private vehicles. Owners can earn from $315 – $1,750 per month simply by renting out their car through the DriveMyCar platform. What’s more, DriveMyCar offers a Manage My Car service which organises the entire rental process on behalf of car owners, from managing bookings and organising inspections and handovers through to car washing, maintenance, and secure parking of the vehicle between rentals. The service also includes comprehensive insurance and roadside assistance.
Zoom2U: Zoom2U is a marketplace that connects couriers with customers right around Australia. Whether you own bicycle, motorbike, car, ute, van or truck, simply sign up as a driver and you will receive a notification via the app when a customer arranges a delivery near you. You can then choose to accept or reject the booking, making you your own boss and giving you complete flexibility on when you work and which bookings you answer. It’s a matter of choosing the workload that is right for you – making it the perfect option for those with a bit of spare time on their hands, but that might not want to engage in full-time work. Zoom2U currently operates in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide, Perth, and the Gold Coast.
