There are a number of times in life where sometimes making an almost counter-intuitive choice can actually change things for the better. Overwhelm would be one of those times, and here’s why.
Most of the times we think we are experiencing a sense of overwhelm, that we have too much going on in our lives, and we immediately look to what we need to eliminate or remove from our lives to help ease that sense. Well, what if the opposite is actually true?
What if you can get out from under feeling overwhelmed by doing something quite different – like adding more?
Overwhelm is actually a sign that you don’t have enough going on in your life. It often covers up other feelings of a lack of momentum, or a sense of tedium, stuckness or even boredom with what we currently have going on, we just don’t look further than the initial sense overwhelm to see what’s actually true for us.
The good news is, with some simple steps, it’s easy to make change that not only stops the overwhelm, but allows you to create more in your life than you thought possible – and with far more ease.
Here are my tips for getting out of overwhelm and into generating a joyful, and more expansive, life:
Don’t eliminate. Add more. Most people try to deal with overwhelm by shutting more things out, or stopping themselves from saying yes to things that would actually contribute to them. But does it ever really work? The more you try and downsize or control elements of your life to deal with what you think is overwhelm, the more you have to diminish yourself and your life. Not so fun. So, next time you catch yourself going “I am so overwhelmed,” – stop, and ask this question: “What can I add to my life today that will create clarity and ease with all of this?” There is always another possibility available to create more ease and joy, and part of the joy of living is expanding our lives rather than contracting. Rather than eliminate, what else can you add to your life that will create more space, more ease and more joy?
Let go of the details. Sometimes we think we are overwhelmed when in fact we are just caught up (or bogged down) in the minutiae of life. That often occurs for those of us who try to do everything ourselves or who have the point of view no one else can or will handle these things as well as we can (sound familiar?). What parts of your life are you getting caught up in details that you could get someone else to help you with or handle? How much stress are you creating making yourself take control of every detail? I have a friend who hated cleaning her house, and realised one day that she could spend $80 on a cleaner each week and free herself up several hours to work on her business, which was a much more productive (and fun!) use of her time. Another friend hated doing stuff on her computer, so she paid her 10 year old to take care of it – and they got it done 10 times faster than she ever could!
Are you committed to doing it the hard way? A lot of people believe if they don’t struggle or have difficulty it means they are not doing enough, being enough or they don’t deserve it. What if that isn’t actually true? What if you are enough, just as you are? What if you didn’t have to prove to you or anyone else that you deserved something? What if you can truly just ask, and receive? When you find yourself going into the mindset of “oh this is difficult, I always struggle with this,” ask instead, “what are the infinite possibilities for this showing up in my life with total ease?” You might be amazed with what can show up!
What if overwhelm was not a sign that you have too much going on, but it was an opportunity for you to look at what you could be choosing that would generate more for you in life? If you change your mindset to seek ‘more’ rather than ‘less’, you will be surprised to see how overwhelm quickly melts away in favour of enthusiasm, inspiration and a whole lot more joy!
