The mere mention of the words ‘beach’ and ‘swim’ can strike fear into the hearts of many an over-40 woman.

With summer holidays just around the corner, it’s time to prepare for swimsuit season.

Whether you’re heading off for a luxury island escape or a laid back family vacay, you don’t need a perfect beach body to look great and feel confident at the beach this summer.

What you do need are my fail-safe tips to choose the right swimwear for your body shape.

Bon voyage.

COLUMN/RECTANGLE

  • Create curves.
  • A one-piece will give the illusion of a smaller waist.  Look for a style with side cut-outs to draw attention to the waist.
  • Look for high cut bikini bottoms with tie sides or ruching to add volume to the hips.
  • If you have a smaller bust, wear bikini tops with added detail such as frills or embellishments.

Jets Plunged Cutout $179.95; Seafolly ‘Summer Vacay’ bikini $164.90.

INVERTED TRIANGLE

  • Halter styles tops will accentuate collarbone and neckline and balance the hips.
  • A midrise bikini bottom with ties gives the illusion of wider hips
  • Avoid bandeau styles as they will accentuate a wider top half
  • Mix and match bikini styles with a print on top and one colour bottom will bring proportion to inverted triangle body shapes

Jets ‘Arcadia’ D/DD one piece $189; Seafolly Twist Cup Halter bikini top $99.95, Seafolly Twist band bikini pant $64.95.

APPLE

If you’re an apple, you have a bigger bust, a wider waist and narrow hips.

  • Create balance by drawing attention to the top half of your body
  • Look for styles that flatter your waist and create shape, like one-pieces with panelling down the side, or tankinis with briefs
  • Wear higher cut bottoms to elongate the legs
  • If you have a bigger bust a retro-style bikini will accentuate your assets

Target ‘Botanical’ tankini $25 and bottom $15; City Chic ‘Corsica’ bikini top $79.95 and bottom $39.95

PEAR/TRIANGLE

  • This body shape needs balance
  • Look for styles that flatter your bottom half and draw the eye to your top half
  • Printed bikini tops worn with plain, dark bottoms work well, as do one-pieces with colourful or printed top halves
  • Minimise hip area with higher cut bottom
  • Wrap-style one-pieces are perfect for pear shapes

Togs ‘Snow White’ underwire one piece $139.95, David Jones; Cotton On bikini top $24.95 and bikini pant $9.95.

HOURGLASS

  • Generally a ‘womanly’ figure of bigger bust, narrow waist and wider hips
  • Show off that waist with belted one-pieces
  • Flattering vintage balconette bra and high-waisted bottoms for bikinis
  • Triangle bikinis are perfect to highlight your curves

Camilla ‘Book A Shade’ triangle bikini $299; City Chic ‘Sunset’ underwire one piece $119.95.
