Take the Fit, Fab & 50 Challenge during Healthy Bones Action Week

Today kicks off this year’s Healthy Bones Action Week and women all around Australia are invited to join the Fit, Fab & 50 Challenge.  Healthy bones are essential to live a fit and active lifestyle, particularly as women approach menopause and the years beyond.  During menopause up to 10 per cent of bone density can be lost, yet over 90 per cent of Australian women over 50 are not getting the recommended four daily serves of dairy needed to keep their bones strong.

The Fit, Fab & 50 Challenge encourages women to kick-start some healthy bone habits. Registration is free at and participants have the chance to win 60 fabulous prizes including a Michael Kors designer handbag; Coles, Westfield and Blue Illusion gift cards; Milk & Co and Endota beauty products; and, a Fitbit fitness tracker.

Challenge participants will be emailed a daily newsletter during the Week with exercise, nutrition, mindfulness, cooking and style tips from prominent Australian women such as dietitian Karen Inge, TV personality Lyndey Milan and fashion designer Lisa Barron among others.

The Challenge encourages women to take three simple actions each day to build and maintain strong bones:

  1. Increase your daily serves of calcium through milk, cheese or yoghurt (women over 50 years of age need four serves a day from the dairy food group). A serve is 250ml milk, 200ml yoghurt, 40g cheese or 120g ricotta cheese;
  2. Go for a walk or commit to some form of regular weight bearing exercise such as jogging, walking or tennis; and
  3. Spend time outdoors to get more vitamin D from safe sun exposure.

Healthy Bones Action Week seeks to reverse the increasing prevalence of osteoporosis in Australia.  Currently two in three Australians over the age of 50 have osteoporosis or osteopenia and by 2022, 6.2million Australians will be affected – an increase of 31 per cent from 2012.
