One of the points I made at our Reconnect event last week was the importance of connecting not only with yourself and your purpose but to be brave and reach out to other like-minded people. Being open and sharing your passion with others, opens the door to opportunities and the exciting part is you never know what lies behind it.
This happened last week to me. I received an invitation through Business Chicks to connect with another member who is also passionate about the business she has created. Esma Versace had obviously spotted me as a member, loves what we’ve done with BalanceBDH and reached out to see if there was some potential in collaborating together. That is what I call taking the initiative… and thank goodness she did.
I checked out her fashion/style blog frocknet.com and loved it immediately. The funny part is, only the day before at our team meeting we discussed the need for a fashion voice on the site – someone who could cover all aspects of fashion style and hair and make-up for women our age. Most fashion magazines tend to skew their fashion spreads towards women who are wearing their first training bra, but we wanted to create a positive narrative that empowers real women to look and feel their best.
So after having a good chinwag with Esma, she mentions she’s already booked a ticket to come along to our Reconnect Brisbane event to meet me in person. And what a delight she is, such a positive uplifting person, being brave and building a small business of her own and pouring all her energy into making things happen.
Esma, who has been a fashion stylist for over a decade, has a passion for not only working in the digital world but combining that with her love of style and helping other women find their own fashion voice… and so starting frocknet.com seemed like a natural progression.
It’s funny, after having spent years as Fashion Editor for The Australian Women’s Weekly, I have very little interest in following fashion anymore. I don’t care about the latest handbag or shoe, I’m much more interested in finding a jean that fits my butt well, a jacket that flatters my shape, a comfortable bra that hides my ‘giblets’, and white leather Converse One Star sneakers that I can wear with just about anything. My focus is geared towards style not fashion.
When we reach a certain age we know what looks good on us and what will never make it past the front door; what colours suit us and what patterns and prints to avoid. We want make-up that highlights our skin tones and helps us look youthful and fresh, as opposed to foundations and powders that covers our face like a mask. We want fashion style advice that steers us in the right direction, keeping it simple, but offering an expert take on what works, like Esma’s tip for choosing the right lipstick if you’re 40 plus!
So as of this week, it’s a pleasure to welcome on board Esma Versace as our resident stylist. We have created a permanent spot for her delivering fresh updates and inspiring ideas from frocknet.com.
Love to hear your feedback, as well as any questions or suggestions you may have … I know Esma will be thrilled to hear from you, as will I.
Till next week…hugs,
