#AGELESS DRESSING: HOW TO WEAR LEATHER OVER 40

By
This post was originally published on this site

There is a myth in the fashion world that women over 40, 50, 60 and beyond should hang up their leather ensembles for good.  (For reasons that include descriptives such as ‘mutton’, ‘biker’ and ‘chick’ to name a few).

But this is simply a myth – and a largely media-imposed one at that.

There is absolutely no reason that women over 40 shouldn’t wear leather, unless of course you are a vegan in which case there are many faux-leather options.

It’s ageless, size-less and demographic-less; cases in point 85-year-old Daphne Self in leather high-neck top, Queen Latifah in black skinnies, and for French women such as Isabelle Huppert, a leather biker jacket is in their style DNA.

Great style is always about how you wear it and leather is no exception.  Whether you’re style is ladylike, elegant, edgy, boho or classic, you can find a leather look that works for you for both day or night.

If you always bear in mind a few simple words when styling leather  – feminine, timeless, classic and modern – you simply can’t go wrong.

So forget the myths and the fashion naysayers,  When days and nights are chilly, rock your favourite leather pants, biker jacket or pencil skirt in #ageless style.

STYLE TIPS:

For those who are not confident in styling leather, here are a few style tips:

Don’t ‘Over Leather’
Wear one leather item only, be it jacket, pants, skirt or dress.  Never two items at one time.

Choose Timeless Silhouettes
Classic styles such as a pencil skirt, a skinny-leg pant, biker jacket or shift dress are #ageless leather looks

Apply the KISS Rule With Accessories
If you’re not confident with styling leather looks, the fail-safe way to accessorise is with simple or elegant jewellery.  Of course, if you are an accessories queen like Iris Apfel, then go for broke with a more elaborate approach.

Skinny Leg Leather Pants
Unless you are giving Elle Macpherson a run for her money in the body department, opt for higher-waisted styles.  Pair with longer-line tunic style tops that skim over your tummy area.

Edgy Loves Feminine
Feminine or ‘ladylike’ pairings such as pretty silk blouses, elegant pumps or fine jewellery soften the edginess of leather looks.

Balance = Comfort = Confidence
Leather is unforgiving.  If it’s too tight, forget it and remember to ‘balance’.  If you’re wearing a tight skinny leg pant or pencil skirt, balance top with a voluminous proportions.

Attitude and Personality
The best thing about ageing is that you care less and less what other people think.  Let your personality and style shine through – after all rules are made to be broken!
