But did you know that you can also add sparkle to party season makeup with one product that is ageless not ageing?

Beauty experts caution us to avoid makeup with shimmer and shine as it draws attention to wrinkles and fine lines. But is there is a way we can add a flattering glow to our faces without the worry of adding years?

Yes.  With illuminator (otherwise known highlighter).

Adding illuminator to your makeup routine can make lacklustre skin appears flawless and glowing.

Simply put, illuminators highlight good areas, e.g. cheekbones, and soften problem spots, e.g. dark circles under eyes. And unlike products with dense amounts of metallics and shimmer, illuminators only have a hint of a pearlised pigment.

How to Choose The Right Illuminator

Illuminators come in powder, cream or liquid formulas. Consult a beauty expert on the right type and shade for your skin tone and type however generally:

  • Dry skin types suit liquid or cream formulas
  • Oilier skins generally suit powder versions

Choosing the Right Shade

It’s important to choose a shade that best flatters your skin tone. The wrong formula or colour can appear too shimmery or frosty.

  • Very Fair Skin: A pearl-coloured illuminator is best
  • Fair to Medium Skin: This skin tone has a choice from a wide range of colours. Champagne or pale gold is generally a great option.
  • Olive: Peach or golden hues
  • Dark: Bronzy gold or copper shades

How to Apply Illuminator

Powder: Apply a powder illuminator with a soft blush brush. Use a circular motion to apply illuminator to brush, shake off excess and swirl or buff in a circular motion.

Cream/Liquid: Dab a small amount with your fingertip to the areas you want to highlight.

Important Tips To Remember:

  • An illuminator is not a foundation. Do not apply to your whole face otherwise you will look like a very bright light bulb
  • Always blend well – illuminators need to blend seamlessly into skin.

Where to Apply Illuminator

Apply illuminator to top of cheekbone, centre/bridge of nose, middle of forehead and chin. If you’re confident with application apply a small amount to cupids-bow to make lips look bigger, or to make eyes appear larger apply a small amount in the corner of your eye and on the brow bone.
