How do women age gracefully when it comes to fashion and style? Are there certain colours that we should or shouldn’t wear? Is it okay to buy tops with plunging necklines once we reach a certain age?
The Balance website offers up a range of information and advice on beauty and fashion – whether it’s tips on hair and makeup, or finding a flattering outfit for a special occasion.
Judith Cook – known as the First Lady of Australian Fashion Styling has helped create some of the most beautiful magazine covers to grace our news stands and says the most important thing a mature woman can do when it comes to ‘style’ is to stop trying to follow trends.
When we discussed this topic with leading Australian fashion icon Collette Dinnigan, she said that every woman should invest in a good quality pashmina in a neutral colour, as well as a great handbag in terms of basic items for the wardrobe. She also spoke about the importance of healthy hair and nails when it comes to looking good.
Jane de Teliga, who has worked as a fashion editor for a range of international women’s magazines, says the best thing a woman can do is to buy herself a good, full-length mirror. She also warns against buying cheap clothing.
“When you are young you can go out to Zara and H&M to buy any little thing… but when you get older you need really well-cut clothes and things that will last,” Jane said.
Since moving to Paris, Jane has changed her attitude towards baggy clothes for older women.
“Australian women tend to wear loose-fitting clothes. Since moving to Europe I now wear more fitted pieces. It doesn’t matter what size you are – I think smooth lines and fitted clothing works well. I’m not talking about tight clothes, but just pieces that show off your figure in a flattering way” Jane said.
